This is Netflix’s most expensive Latin American project to date, with Colombian groups and indigenous communities creating the props and sets for the series. One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of the greatest highlights of Spanish-language literature. Its style is unparalleled and its reach is beyond imagination. Its characters are so well-drawn that any screenwriter would have no problem writing them for the screen. But perhaps the insurmountable problem in adapting the novel was its length. Compressing a hundred years of family and national history was an impossible task. Almost 60 years after its publication, the novel has found a cinematic home on Netflix. Only streaming can do that, and the first 2 episodes are truly promising. Great photography, art direction, and respect for the characters. Voice-over is essential to make García Márquez’s beautiful prose pop up from time to time. The plot unfolds with fluidity, richness, and depth. I love it and was a little skeptical that the magical world of GGM could be brought to the screen. Wall, so far it’s a success in my opinion. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the most important TV and streaming premieres this month. Check out our December calendar to learn more!
